What we keep, and what we refuse to.

dstll exists to push back on the attention economy, not to join it. So this policy is short and literal: we store the things you deliberately save, we use a few processors to make the product work, and we never sell your data or track you across the web.

01What we collect

• Your account. If you sign in, we receive your email address and basic profile from your Google account through our authentication provider. That's how your collection stays yours across devices.
• What you save. When you keep a distillation, we store the distilled ideas (with their timestamps or section anchors), the source link, title and type, the signal score and how it's framed, the compression level you chose, the topic tags we derive, and the one-line "why I'm keeping this" you write. This is the product — it's stored against your account, and only you can read it.
• Waitlist email. If you join the waitlist, we store the email you give us, so we can tell you when there's something to try.
• Product events. We record a small number of in-app events (for example, "a distillation was saved") to learn whether the core idea works. These are about behaviour, not the content of what you read.
• Site analytics. This website uses Plausible — cookieless and aggregate, with no personal profiles and no cross-site tracking.
• Ad measurement. If you reach dstll from one of our Google ads and accept cookies, Google sets a cookie so we can tell that the ad led to a sign-up or install. It measures whether our ads work — it never builds a profile of you or follows you around the web. Decline, and no such cookie is set.

02How distillation works

When you distill a page, the text is extracted in your browser — the extension reads the article or the captions on the tab you're already looking at. That clean text is then sent to our distill service, which asks a large-language-model provider to compress and score it, and returns the result to you.

• We send the model only the clean text you chose to distill — not your browsing history, and never audio.
• We don't crawl the web or fetch pages from a server on your behalf; extraction is user-initiated, per active tab, in your browser.
• Under our language-model provider's commercial API terms (currently Anthropic), the text you distill is processed only to produce your result — it is not used to train their models.

03Who processes your data

We keep the list of third parties deliberately small. Each one does a single job:

• Supabase — database, authentication, and the distill function. This is where your account and saved items live.
• Anthropic — the language model that performs the compression and scoring on the text you distill.
• Google — only if you choose "sign in with Google", to verify who you are.
• Cloudflare — serves this website and routes its traffic.
• Plausible — privacy-first, cookieless website analytics.
• Google Ads — only if you accept cookies, measures whether an ad we ran led you here (a sign-up or install). Conversion measurement only — no remarketing, no cross-site profile.

Our use of data received from Google APIs — and of any data the dstll extension collects — adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.

04What we don't do

• We don't sell or rent your data. Ever.
• We don't run remarketing or ad-targeting trackers. We do advertise dstll on Google and — only if you accept — measure whether an ad worked; we never build audiences or follow you across the web to re-show you ads.
• We don't use cross-site tracking cookies. The only cookies we set are the one that keeps you signed in and, if you accept, a single Google Ads cookie that measures whether an ad brought you here.
• We don't record audio, capture your screen, or read tabs you didn't ask us to distill.
• We don't log your browsing history — only the source URL of an item you explicitly save lands in your collection.
• We don't capture your keystrokes or fingerprint your device.

05Your controls

• See and delete what you saved — your collection is editable from inside the product.
• Delete your account — ask us, and we'll remove your account and the items tied to it.
• Leave the waitlist — email us and we'll take you off it.
• Change your cookie choice — reopen the cookie banner to accept or decline ad-measurement cookies at any time.

06Storage and retention

We keep your saved items for as long as you keep your account — that's the point of a collection you can return to. Delete an item and it's gone; delete your account and we remove the rest. Access to your data is protected with row-level security, so one account can never read another's.

07Children

dstll isn't directed at children under 13 (or the equivalent age where you live), and we don't knowingly collect their data.

08Changes

If this policy changes in a way that matters, we'll update the date above, and for anything significant we'll tell you directly.
